In those days, when he hadn't really known anything at all, geisha had seemed to him the most beautiful and enchanting of creatures. When a geisha spoke to him, it made him so unspeakably happy that he hardly knew what to do. Today, even if he wanted to, he could never return to such an innocent state of mind.
