Pablo Picasso Spanish, worked in France, 1881-1973 Femme et Enfant (Woman and Child), Bequest of T. Catesby Jones Picasso was becoming prosperous and respectable at the time he made this print, and quite attached to his infant son Paulo and his wife Olga. With a kind of stark tenderness, he made monumental neo-classical images of mothers and children. Here, a huge infant addresses his powerful mother almost like a lover. She gazes intently, her mirror lowered. And yet, despite this lovely scene (both real and mythic), Picasso was beginning to yearn again for a more bohemian existence. |
